VSE Helical Screw Flow Meter for hydraulic

Measuring volume flows using a helical screw flow meter is a known principle. VSE Volumentechnik GmbH has developed a significant innovation based on this measuring technology. A year ago we introduced the new generation of helical screw flow meters of the rotor sensor (RS) series. And it seems that the market had been waiting for this introduction.

When looking at the advantages of measuring volume flows according to the screw pump principle of the VSE RS series, it becomes clear why. The new rotor sensor promises

  • High degree of precision that is mostly independent of viscosity
  • Pulsation-free measurement
  • Lowest pressure losses
  • Short response time due to innovative rotor profiles and reduced masses
  • Gentle fluid measurements
  • Highest functionality due to intelligent sensor technology

For this purpose, the VSE development department created completely new rotor profiles. They ensure a low-resistance, high-precision measurement. The up to 45 % reduced mass results in a significantly improved response characteristic – big advantage over devices previously available in the market.

VSE optimized material and technology in the bearing area. The combined radial / axial ball bearing is shielded behind bearing brackets shaped to be flow-optimized. Depending on size and intended use, either spindle bearings or precision ball bearings are used in tandem. For poorly lubricating or contaminated fluids, ceramic materials are used. The devices can be operated applying the same load in both flow directions. The rotor and housing material selection ranges from modular graphite castings, via roller bearing steel, to various kinds of stainless steel.

VSE also backs new developments in the area of signal formation. Based on the patented VSI high definition sensor system, a sensor module was created that enhances the functionality of the RS flow meter significantly. The sensor itself features two GMR bridges (sin / cos) and is housed in a removable stainless steel cartridge case together with a signal conditioning and amplifier unit. It can be replaced without problems as needed.

The downstream electronics unit features a high-resolution sin / cos-interpolator, which can increase the resolution in increments up to a factor of 128 while maintaining exactly the same pulse lengths. Among others, the device features a programmable signal filter, which is able to offset unwanted, negative pulse sequences and detects and saves values that exceed the indicated flow and temperature values. A separate directional signal is available for 1-channel evaluations.

It is therefore also possible to operate large-volume devices without the loss of frequency and accuracy while using low flow rates. Flow-proportional output frequencies up to 100 kHz are possible. The functionality can be further increased with other programmable options, for example, the flow meter can be adjusted to the respective measuring task without investing too much effort on the evaluation side.

Various sizes for flow ranges of 0.1 to 3,000 l/min are available. The devices are designed for pressures up to 450 bar and are initially suitable for temperatures of up to 120°C. Additional functions still under development can be retrofitted subsequently using software upgrades, also on-site.
